Nestled between Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, and the rugged mountain ranges of Northwest Montana, the Flathead Valley is home to an extensive and diverse network of trails waiting to be explored. From scenic family-friendly pathways and forested hiking trails to mountain biking routes, backcountry adventures, equestrian trails, winter recreation, and wilderness experiences, the Flathead offers outdoor opportunities for every type of trail user.

The Flathead Trails Association serves as a collaborative hub connecting trail organizations, land managers, and trail users to advance sustainable trails throughout the region. Through partnerships, volunteer stewardship, education, and advocacy, FTA works to ensure our trail systems remain accessible, well-maintained, and enjoyable for generations to come.

Trail opportunities exist year-round across the Flathead Valley. Spring, summer, and fall bring hiking, mountain biking, trail running, horseback riding, and paddling access, while winter offers opportunities for Nordic skiing, fat biking, snowshoeing, and backcountry recreation. Dedicated volunteers and partner organizations contribute thousands of hours annually to maintain, improve, and expand the trails that connect our communities to the landscapes we love.

Whitefish Legacy Partners - The Whitefish Trail

Surrounding the City of Whitefish and stretching through forests, lakeshores, and scenic ridgelines, the Whitefish Trail offers more than 50 miles of interconnected non-motorized trails and conserved open lands. The trail system provides year-round opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, trail running, snowshoeing, and nature exploration.

With multiple trailheads and access points, visitors can enjoy everything from leisurely walks around Whitefish Lake to challenging climbs with panoramic views of the Whitefish Range, Flathead Valley, Glacier National Park, and surrounding mountain landscapes. The Whitefish Trail is a nationally recognized example of community-driven conservation and outdoor recreation, connecting people to the places that make Whitefish special.

Flathead Area Mountain Bikers - Crane Mountain Trails

Located just west of Kalispell, the Crane Mountain Trail System offers a growing network of purpose-built singletrack trails for mountain bikers, trail runners, and hikers. Developed and maintained by the Flathead Area Mountain Bikers (FAMB), the system features a variety of terrain, from flowing beginner-friendly trails to more technical routes for experienced riders.

The trail system winds through forested hillsides and open viewpoints, providing scenic views of the Flathead Valley, surrounding mountain ranges, and nearby public lands. Its close proximity to Kalispell makes Crane Mountain a popular destination for after-work rides, training runs, and family-friendly outdoor recreation.

Foys to blacktail trails - herron park

Located on the western edge of Kalispell, Herron Park is a community-supported trail system managed by Foys to Blacktail Trails. The area offers a diverse network of trails for mountain biking, hiking, trail running, horseback riding, and winter recreation, making it one of the Flathead Valley's most accessible outdoor destinations.

The trail system winds through forested hillsides, open meadows, and scenic overlooks, providing expansive views of the Flathead Valley, Kalispell, and surrounding mountain ranges. With trails ranging from beginner-friendly routes to challenging climbs and descents, Herron Park serves as a year-round recreation hub and an important gateway to the larger Foys to Blacktail trail network.
