FRA River Ambassador Field Training
Flathead Rivers Alliance River Ambassador Program
Flathead Rivers Alliance (FRA) is ramping up for the 2025 river season and recruiting 40 volunteer team members! Are you passionate about the river system that inspired a national protected Wild and Scenic River system? We’re expanding our River Ambassador program – join us to make a difference and give back to the river you love!
Do you love connecting with people and spending time at the river? Join our River Ambassador team and serve as liaisons with the public at popular river access sites along the Three Forks of the Flathead Wild and Scenic River. This summer volunteers will help:
celebrate outstanding remarkable values of the river system;
provide safety, ethics, and etiquette tips;
offer information on river rules and regulations;
reference maps to suggest floats;
collect access site user related information;
offer loaner life jackets through our partnership with MT FWP;
and more!
This event will be one of five scheduled River Access Site trainings throughout the month of May. River ambassadors will be required to attend only one of these on-site sessions. Please see our Events Page for other options of dates and times, and sign up via the Google Form - https://forms.gle/5FZm5uRvQPzHW3298

FRA River Recreation Monitoring
Flathead Rivers Alliance River Recreation Monitoring/Citizen Scientist Program
Flathead Rivers Alliance (FRA) is ramping up for the 2025 river season and recruiting volunteer team members! Are you passionate about the river system that inspired a national protected Wild and Scenic River system? We’re expanding our River Recreation Monitoring/Citizen Scientist program – join us to make a difference and give back to the river you love!
If you enjoy floating the river and have a desire to be an active stakeholder while doing so, this volunteer opportunity is for you. Stakeholders are trained to conduct river recreation use monitoring using the Survey 123 mobile data collection app. This tool allows trained volunteers to collect river user, wildlife, and invasive species data as they float the river. Data collected will enhance data sets that are collected by agency partner river patrols. This program is ideal for volunteers who have their own river running equipment that can accommodate at least two people. If you don’t have your own we will try our best to connect you with someone that can row or paddle you as you collect data.
This event will be one of five scheduled River Recreation Monitoring on-site trainings throughout the month of May. Volunteering citizen scientists will be required to attend only one of these on-site sessions. These trainings will be shore-based; you will not need your float gear to attend. Please see our Events Page for other options of dates and times, and sign up via the Google Form - https://forms.gle/D7CqjAatfn778NUH8

FRA Citizen Science Water Quality Training
Citizen Science- Water Quality Monitoring Training
Wednesday, May 7th, 2025
12:30 - 2:30 PM
Blankenship River Access Site
***RSVP for Training Required***
WHY MONITOR
Flathead Rivers Alliance seeks volunteers to help with water quality monitoring efforts on the North and Middle Forks of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River. We all seek a better understanding of impacts that an increase in river users, population, and changing climate trends will have on the river corridor. Gathering baseline monitoring data will also help our stakeholder groups determine how to focus nonpoint source pollution education and outreach, and where and how to expand monitoring. Monitoring runs May through October.
TRAINING PARTNERS
Thanks to a grant from Montana Monitoring Waters (MMW) we are honored to host Dr. Rachel Malison, Jared Glass, and Brianna Elizondo from Flathead Lake Biological Station’s Montana Montana Waters program to lead the May 7th citizen science training.
CITIZEN SCIENCE BACKGROUND
Adventure Scientists, a non-profit organization, coordinated a 3-year nationwide baseline data collection on all Wild & Scenic Rivers across the nation using citizen scientists from 2020-2023 (www.adventurescientists.org/rivers.html). On the Three Forks of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River they assessed parameters (pH, DO, TDS, salinity, temperature, Total Nitrogen, and Total Phosphorus) at select sites on both the Middle and North Forks of the Flathead Rivers. Their monitoring project ended spring 2023 and Flathead Rivers Alliance piloted program summer 2023. Flathead Rivers Alliance will continue those efforts initiated by Adventure Scientists to combine water quality data to have a better understanding of baseline quality, trends, and build a relevant database towards future conservation and management efforts in the Flathead Headwaters (Three Forks of the Flathead River) watershed.
CONTACT
Email us at program@flatheadrivers.org if you have any questions.

Program Support
Thank you to our funding partners Monitoring Montana Waters, American Rivers, Flathead National Forest, Glacier Raft Co., Sawyer Paddles & Oars, NRS, Whitefish Community Foundation- Great Fish, and those who donate to our mission work and Adventure Scientists for in-kind supply donations.
Developing a water quality monitoring plan attuned to threats to the water quality of the 3 Forks of the Flathead River, and to the information needs of the public has been a mutual goal of Flathead Rivers Alliance and the Flathead National Forest, per the partners’ Challenge Cost Share Agreement.

Health and wellness sponsors include: Logan Health Foundation, The IV Element, Whitefish Convention and Visitors Bureau, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, and The Wave Aquatic and Fitness Center.
This year, we’re thrilled to partner with Connect Whitefish’s Walk N Roll initiative, a Whitefish City program designed to encourage human-powered transportation, walking, biking, and rolling, to navigate Whitefish. This initiative promotes reduced vehicle traffic and fosters safer streets and healthier habits. Together, the WT Hit the Trail Challenge and City's Walk N Roll will inspire our community to embrace an active lifestyle while making a positive impact on the town we love.
Miles can be logged for both programs with an online form, by joining the Hit the Trail Challenge Strava Club, or by paper log sheet. Awards and raffle prizes will be given to participants who hit certain targets throughout the month.

Preserving the Resource edition
Gather ‘round for a rowdy bunch of stories straight from the Bob – we’re hosting more campfire tales at Sacred Waters Brewing Co.! This lively evening will celebrate the launch of our 2025 Volunteer Adventure schedule (released Monday, April 14th!) and kick off our spring fundraising campaign to get our full schedule of crews into the backcountry this summer.
Enjoy some entertaining yarns spun by our talented storytellers, and learn how you can support close to 50 trails and habitat projects happening in the Bob this summer. Free of charge and open to all.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS: Roy Jacobs and Ben Chappelow
Roy and Ben are two sides of the conservation coin. Roy Jacobs has been a hunter, guide and conservationist along the Rocky Mountain Front for decades. As a hunting guide, he’s explored many a nook and cranny across the Complex. Roy was front and center for the passage of the Rocky Mountain Heritage Act, which expanded the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex by 67,000 acres in 2014.
On the flip side, FWP game warden Ben Chappelow has been patrolling the Great Bear and Bob Marshall Wilderness areas since 2020. On horseback in the summer and skis or snowshoes in the winter, Ben travels deep into the Bob to chat with hunters and anglers, help with bear conflicts, and monitor backcountry camps. It’s safe to say, he’s seen some stuff in the backcountry.
We can’t wait to hear these two share their tales from their years of traversing the wilderness. We hope you’ll join us!

Taking Flight: Golden Eagles in Glacier National Park
Golden eagles are one of the largest aerial predators in Northwest Montana – or as Lisa says, “the grizzly bears of the sky.” Unfortunately, recent data indicates a decline in their numbers and they’ve been listed as a Species of Concern. Join us to learn more about Glacier National Park’s raptor / golden eagle observations and nest monitoring to better understand these avian predators, including the role that lookouts play in aiding park staff in observations and searching for nests.
Lisa Bate is a Supervisory Wildlife Biologist at Glacier National Park. She specializes in birds and bats, overseeing multiple research, inventory, and monitoring programs including harlequin ducks, songbirds, raptor nesting and migration, black swifts, Clark’s nutcrackers, and bats. Lisa Bate also oversees wildlife and compliance monitoring for projects like the reconstruction of the Going-to-the-Sun and Many Glacier Roads, focused on preventing detrimental effects to grizzly bears. Prior to her employment at GNP, Lisa worked as a private research wildlife biologist focusing mainly on birds, cavity-nesting species, and their habitat.

If rocks could talk
The mountains of Glacier National Park tell an incredible story of the geological events that created the park’s majestic scenery. Teagan will share an overview of the forces and processes that built and shaped the landscape of Glacier National Park.
Teagan Tomlin first came to Montana in 2008 for an internship at Glacier National Park through the Geological Society of America’s Geocorps program. At that time, she was finishing her master’s degree in geology at Brigham Young University, where her research focused on teaching stratigraphy and sedimentology concepts, geological data interpretation, and problem-solving and student-centered instructional design. In 2009, she was hired as a park ranger at Glacier National Park and worked seasonally from 2009 through 2016 working in interpretation and education. In the fall of 2016, she was hired to her first permanent position in the National Park Service as a visitor services assistant. In 2019, she was hired in her current role as the executive assistant in the Office of the Superintendent.

Please contact wteducation@whitefishlegacy.org before February 24th at 5pm if you do not have your own and would like to reserve some for the program, and Legacy Partners will pick them up for you.
This program is free and family friendly! We know committing to plans can be difficult--your RSVP is appreciated but not required. When you RSVP, be sure to do so for each member of your party and cancel if you change plans.
This event is weather dependent. Please check your email for last minute cancellations before attending.
For more information about this or other scheduled outings call 406-862-3880 or email wteducation@whitefishlegacy.org.

XC Ski with Wild Montana
Strap on your XC skis as we head out for a ski among the trees at Round Meadows. We’ll start on the wooded Round Meadows Loop trail and then make our around the full tour. Then, we’ll head back on the and finish where we started. A hot cocoa thermos will be waiting for us in the parking lot. This will be a moderately paced ski with some short hills, so pack some snacks and get ready to shed some layers.
